Dr. Krahn publishes in JAMA and has a book launch in December – Congratulations!

Dr. Murray Krahn and his colleagues from the Second Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine publish an article in JAMA, and expect a book launch in December in Washington DC.

Concern about a lack of methodological standards, and a goal to improve the quality of cost-effectiveness analyses and promote comparability across studies, inspired the creation of the first Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine, which developed an original document on standards for the conduct and reporting of a CEA in 1993.

The Second Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine has been called in 2012 to update the guidelines, develop new recommendations, and review the current status of the field of cost-effectiveness analysis.

Among the Key Recommendations:

  • The concept of a "reference case" and a set of standard methodological practices that all cost-effectiveness analyses should follow to improve quality and comparability;
  • All cost-effectiveness analyses should report two reference case analyses: one based on a health care sector perspective and another based on a societal perspective;
  • Use of an "impact inventory," which is a structured table that contains consequences (both inside and outside the formal health care sector), intended to clarify the scope and boundaries of the two reference case analyses.
