Dr. Murray Krahn, Program Director at THETA Collaborative and a Senior Scientist at UHN’s Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, led a study that analyzed the healthcare costs and survival rates of patients who received dialysis in the province of Ontario. The research showed that costs for patients receiving home dialysis were 60% lower than those for patients receiving dialysis in a clinic. In addition, the patients who received home dialysis had better survival rates compared to those who received dialysis at the clinic. Read more by clicking the title.

Dr. Murray Krahn, MD, MSc, FRCPC is the 2019 recipient of the Society for Medical Decision Making Career Achievement Award. The award recognizes distinguished senior investigators who've made significant contributions to the field and acknowledges seminal work in medical decision making. Dr. Krahn was also a recipient of the SMDM Award for Distinguished Service in 2018. The SMDM Award for Distinguished Service recognizes exceptional efforts in support of the Society.

Aysegul Erman, a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Pharmacy supervised by Dr. Murray Krahn defended her thesis on September 2019. For her post-doctoral project, she will be working with Dr. Beate Sander, the Director of Health Modeling & Health Economics and Population Health Research at THETA to determine areas of investment where policymakers should focus efforts to eliminate HCV among immigrants in Canada using population-level administrative healthcare data.

THETA team and the collaborating partners from ICES, Ontario First Nations HIV Aids Education Circle (OFNHAEC), Public Health Ontario, University Health Network, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, St. Michaels Hospital and the Department of Indigenous Services Canada, have been awarded a three year project grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
The core idea for this project and the collaborative relationship with the OFNHAEC has been formulated in part as a result of the work and research interests of Andrew Mendlowitz, PhD(c)

Dr. Krahn interview with CMAJ about his latest publication on science of value in health

Dr. Murray Krahn has joined Kirsten Patrick, Deputy Editor at Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) for an interview discussing cost-effectiveness and optimal use of resources in health care. The interview was inspired by the article published by Dr. Krahn in the current issue of CMAJ "Embracing the science of value in health".

Dr. Beate Sander, Director of Health Modeling & Health Economics and Population Health Economics Research (PHER) Division at THETA, examines the economic and social impact of infectious diseases.

Beate Sander is one of the Principal Investigators receiving funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for a research project to determine the optimal strategy for preventing GBS disease in Ontario infants.

Drs. Stephen Mac and Alan Tam are researchers at the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME) and TRI. Their research on the cost-effectiveness of the Fast Track program was published in the International Journal of Rehabilitation Research in November.
